Kimberly J. (Aspinwall) Carlton, M. Ed.
American Riding Instructors Association Certified Instructor
Kimberly
J. Carlton began formal riding instruction at the age of four at
Tamarack Farm in Connecticut. Moving with her family to New Hampshire,
Kim was instructed in saddleseat, huntseat, dressage, and western riding
with several inspirational and excellent instructors including
internationally-respected Charlotte Reed from Ireland. Kim’s family
purchased her first horse when she was ten, enabling her to ride more
often and join 4-H. Kim’s competitive spirit and a dedicated instructor,
Mrs. Rita Todd, led her to begin competing. Kim was very involved and
successful in horse judging, quiz bowls, and riding competitions. In the
70’s she was the consistent top equitation rider at all NH events aboard
her beloved horses, most notably, Star’s Genius. Obtaining more wins
than any other rider, she was the recipient of the Marcia Lang Memorial
Challenge trophy. As an adult, Kim piloted her stunning mare Carnival’s
Elegance to countless championships throughout New England.
Kim began teaching riding and horsemanship at her family’s farm in
Bedford NH in 1973. She continued to teach riding while she completed
her B. A. in Psychology at St. Anselm College, graduating summa cum
laude. She also earned a Master’s degree in Education. Kim was named
LJHS “Teacher of the Year” for her excellence as an educator during her
twelve years in the Londonderry school district.
Kim is a Certified Riding Instructor with the American Riding
Instructors Association. She is past President of the New Hampshire
Horse and Trail Association. She was the honored recipient of the NH
Dalton Sportsmanship award. She instructs recreational riders through
top show ring competitors focusing on equitation and horsemanship, and
enjoys competing on her show horse “Remember the Party” and hours on the
trails on her sporthorse, “Brooke”.
“I love to teach and ride, and I love horses. I have been teaching
riding for over 35 years now and I love it as much as when I started. I
think I bring that continued interest and enthusiasm with an always
growing pool of knowledge to each of my students. The intent of my
lesson program is to achieve excellence in horsemanship, sportsmanship
and education in an atmosphere that promotes student and equine safety
and esteem. I hope to have all of my students achieve their riding goals
and be able to enjoy horses as part of their lives.”
Family
Notes: Kim has been happily married to Ken for over twenty five years.
Kim is the mother of two accomplished daughters that have inherited her
passion for horses and the equestrian arts. Both daughters have been
awarded the NH state award for equestrian sportsmanship. Kim instructed
her daughter Alexandra to the Marcia Lang Challenge trophy and the New
England Equitation Championship. Alexandra went on to be
triple-qualified for the Nationals, and competed successfully in the
Equitation Olympics in 2003. After many local and regional awards, Eliza
Sarah was third in the World in English Equitation and fourth in the
World in Western Equitation in 2007, after winning the San Antonio Rodeo
All-Round in 2006. Alexandra holds a Masters Degree in Education and
currently competes as an Amateur Adult when she is not teaching school
in Boston. Eliza attends Purdue University and rides as an Advanced
member of the Purdue University equestrian team.
